On VPS and dedicated servers, you get a dedicated IP automatically — that's the default. On shared hosting, you share an IP with other accounts on the server, but a dedicated IP is available as an add-on.
Shared hosting and IPs
By default, shared and WordPress hosting accounts share a server IP. Multiple accounts on the same server respond on the same IP — the web server uses the Host: header to know which site you're asking for.
This is fine for the vast majority of sites. Modern HTTPS uses SNI (Server Name Indication), so SSL certificates work per-domain even on a shared IP. There's no SEO penalty or speed difference.
When you'd want a dedicated IP
Cases where shared isn't sufficient:
- Email sender reputation isolation — if you're sending lots of email, sharing an IP with a spammer can hurt your deliverability. A dedicated IP lets you build sender reputation on your own. (Note: most email goes through smarthosts these days; the IP of your hosting matters less than the IP of your email-sending service.)
- Some legacy applications that hard-code IPs.
- Whitelisting requirements — some third-party services (banks, payment processors) require you to provide a static IP for their firewall.
- Compliance frameworks that require a unique IP per environment.
How to add one
For shared/WordPress hosting:
- Open a ticket with our team.
- Tell us which service you want a dedicated IP for and why (so we can recommend whether you actually need one).
- We add the IP to your account; small monthly add-on fee applies.
For VPS and dedicated servers, you already have a dedicated IP — your service detail page shows it under Information.
Multiple IPs on a VPS
If you need multiple dedicated IPs on a VPS (for testing, multi-tenant SaaS, etc.), open a ticket. Most VPS plans support adding additional IPs as add-ons.
IPv4 vs IPv6
We support both:
- IPv4 — what most people mean when they say "IP address." Always allocated.
- IPv6 — the newer protocol. Allocated on every new VPS; available on shared hosting where the server supports it.
Modern visitors generally have both; the browser picks whichever resolves first. You don't need to choose.
Reverse DNS
For dedicated IPs (especially on VPS), you can set custom reverse DNS so the IP resolves to a specific hostname. Useful for email senders (improves deliverability) and "looks professional" reasons.
On VPS, the Reverse DNS tool in the portal's service detail page lets you set this directly. On shared, open a ticket if you have a dedicated IP and want a specific reverse DNS.
Pricing
Dedicated IP add-on pricing for shared hosting varies; the order page or our team can quote current pricing. VPS dedicated IPs are included with the plan; additional IPs above the included count are add-ons.
What it doesn't change
A dedicated IP doesn't:
- Make your site faster (server load is the same).
- Improve SEO ranking (Google doesn't care about IP-sharing).
- Affect SSL — modern SSL works fine on shared IPs via SNI.
- Hide you from anyone — your IP is public regardless.
If someone's promising those benefits, they're stretching. The real reasons are listed above; pick a dedicated IP only if one of those applies.
