Moving your website to new hosting does not hurt your SEO by itself. Search engines rank URLs, not servers. As long as your domain stays the same, your URLs don't change, and the site resolves correctly during the switch, Google has no reason to treat your content as new or different. The risk isn't the migration, it's the details: broken redirects, changed URLs, downtime during DNS propagation, or a lost SSL certificate.
Here's what actually changes with a host transfer, and what stays exactly as it was.
What does not change
- Your domain name. If you're only moving hosting (not changing domains), your URLs stay identical. Google has no reason to re-crawl and re-rank from scratch.
- Backlinks. Links pointing to your pages from other sites keep working, since they point at your domain, not your server.
- Indexed pages and rankings. Search engines don't "forget" a site because the IP address behind it changed. Rankings are tied to content and URLs, which a hosting move doesn't touch.
- Structured data and meta tags. If you migrate your files as-is, your schema markup, titles, and descriptions move with them.
What can change, and needs your attention
DNS and downtime
During a transfer, your domain's DNS records need to point at the new server. If there's a gap where DNS is misconfigured or propagation is incomplete, your site can go down or serve inconsistent content to different visitors depending on which DNS server they hit. Short outages (a few hours) during a planned cutover generally don't affect rankings. Extended downtime can cause Google to temporarily drop pages from the index if crawlers repeatedly hit errors.
If Flashcloud is doing the move for you, the old site stays live until the new one is confirmed working, so there's no gap for search engines to notice.
SSL certificate
Your new host needs a valid SSL certificate issued for your domain before or immediately after cutover. If your site briefly serves over plain HTTP, or the certificate doesn't match the domain, browsers show a security warning and Google's crawlers treat the page as insecure. A domain hosted with Flashcloud gets a free Let's Encrypt certificate issued automatically, typically within about 5 minutes of DNS pointing at us, and it renews on its own after that.
URL structure
This is the one that actually matters for SEO. If your migration changes URLs, either because the new platform generates different paths, you're changing CMS, or you're restructuring the site at the same time, every changed URL needs a 301 redirect from the old path to the new one. Skipping this is the single most common way a "hosting move" turns into a real ranking loss: search engines see 404s where content used to be, and any authority the old URL had doesn't transfer.
If you're not changing URL structure, you don't need redirects. Same URLs, same content, new server: nothing for search engines to reconcile.
Site speed
Page speed is a ranking factor, and it's one of the few things that can genuinely improve after a good migration. If your new host has faster storage, a caching layer, or better routing than the old one, Core Web Vitals scores can improve within a few weeks of the crawler re-measuring your pages. robots.txt and sitemap
Double check that your robots.txt file didn't get reset to something more restrictive during the move (a "Disallow: /" is the classic accident from a staging environment config carrying over). Confirm your XML sitemap is still reachable at its usual path and still lists live URLs. Neither of these normally breaks during a hosting-only move, but they're worth a quick check after any transfer, especially if you or your migration tool touched configuration files.
A quick post-migration checklist
- Confirm the site loads over
https://with no certificate warnings. - Spot-check a handful of important URLs to confirm they return content, not a 404 or the old host's placeholder page.
- If URLs changed, verify 301 redirects are in place for the pages most likely to have external links or search traffic.
robots.txtstill allows crawling and your sitemap is reachable.- In Google Search Console, submit the sitemap again if it wasn't auto-detected, and watch the Coverage report over the following weeks for crawl errors.
When to contact support
