To move a domain from Name.com to Flashcloud: unlock the domain and get its auth code from your Name.com account, then start the transfer from our side under Marketplace > Domains > Transfer one in. Enter the domain, run Check eligibility, and follow the steps from there. The transfer adds a free year to the domain's registration and includes WHOIS privacy at no extra cost.
At Name.com: unlock the domain and get the auth code
Sign in to your Name.com account and open My Domains. Click the domain you're moving. You're looking for two things:
- Transfer lock: Name.com calls this the "Transfer Lock" toggle, usually on the domain's overview or settings tab. Switch it off. This is the same registrar lock every registry requires be disabled before a transfer can start (see unlocking a domain for transfer for why this exists and what to do if a registrar won't cooperate).
- Auth code (EPP code): on the same domain page, look for "Transfer" or "Auth Code" in the settings. Name.com emails the code to the account's contact address rather than displaying it directly in some cases, so check your inbox if you don't see it on screen right away.
Name.com's dashboard layout changes from time to time, so if these options aren't where described, search their help center for "transfer lock" or "auth code" or contact their support. Both are standard ICANN-required features, so every registrar has to offer them somewhere.
Check your WHOIS contact email
Name.com will send a transfer confirmation to whatever email is listed as the domain's registrant contact. If that inbox is stale or you can't access it, update the contact email at Name.com before you start the transfer, or the confirmation message will go nowhere and the transfer will stall. If you had WHOIS privacy enabled at Name.com, the same caution applies: privacy proxies sometimes complicate confirmation delivery, so it's worth turning it off a day ahead if you're unsure the forwarding works. Our own approach to this is covered in WHOIS privacy.
Confirm the domain is old enough to transfer
Domains generally can't be transferred for a period after registration or a prior transfer, per ICANN policy. If your domain was recently registered or transferred at Name.com, wait before starting. Also check the expiration date: if it's close to expiring, renew at Name.com first so the transfer has time to complete before the domain lapses.
At Flashcloud: start the transfer
Once the domain is unlocked and you have the auth code:
- Sign in to your account and go to Marketplace.
- Click Domains, then Transfer one in (also reachable from Domains > Transfer).
- Type the full domain name, including the extension.
- Click Check eligibility. This confirms the domain can be transferred to us.
Once eligibility passes, the transfer proceeds through the standard registry process between the losing and gaining registrars.
What you get from the transfer
A domain transfer to Flashcloud adds one free year to the domain's remaining registration, regardless of which registrar you're coming from. WHOIS privacy is included at no extra cost, on the TLDs where privacy proxies are permitted. Once the transfer completes, manage the domain the same way as any other domain in your account: renewal, auto-renew, registrar lock, and nameservers all live on the domain's detail page in Domains.
Point the domain at your hosting
A domain transfer only moves registration, not DNS. If you're also hosting with us (or plan to), you'll need to point the domain at your hosting account separately, either by switching nameservers or updating an A record. See pointing your domain to your hosting account for both options and which one fits your setup.
Common gotchas
- Transfer lock still on: eligibility check will fail if Name.com's transfer lock wasn't actually disabled. Double check it's off, not just that you clicked something.
- Wrong or expired auth code: auth codes from Name.com are case-sensitive and can expire or regenerate if you request a new one. Use the most recent code you were given.
- DNS gap: if you were relying on Name.com's DNS for the domain, set up matching records at your new nameservers before the transfer finishes, or the domain will go dark for a stretch mid-transfer.
If something stalls
If Check eligibility keeps failing, or the transfer seems stuck without a confirmation email reaching you, open a ticket from Support in your account. Include the domain name and roughly when you started the transfer at Name.com. Support is real people, no phone tree, and they can check the transfer status on our end and tell you exactly what's holding it up.
