If your domain shows "Squarespace Domains" or you registered it back when it was Google Domains, the management screen lives inside your Squarespace account, not a separate site. Unlock it and pull the transfer code from there, then start the transfer from our side: Marketplace > Domains > Transfer one in > Check eligibility. That step adds a free year to the domain and includes WHOIS privacy at no cost.
Find the lock and EPP code at Squarespace
Here's where things live:
- Sign in to Squarespace and open the domain from your account's Domains panel (not the website editor).
- Look for Domain Lock or Transfer Lock in the domain's settings. Turn it off. If you registered under Google Domains and never touched this setting, it's on by default.
- Find the option labeled Get transfer code or Authorization code. Squarespace usually emails it to the domain's registrant contact rather than displaying it directly. Check that inbox if you don't see the code on screen right away.
- Confirm the contact email on the domain is one you actually check. Both Squarespace and the new registry will send confirmation messages there during the transfer.
If the lock toggle or transfer code option isn't where you expect, search Squarespace's own help center for "transfer domain away."
If Squarespace won't unlock it
ICANN rules require registrars to remove a transfer lock on request, and an unpaid invoice or dispute is not a valid reason to withhold your transfer code as long as the domain itself isn't expired (see unlocking a domain for transfer). If you hit either wall, you can escalate the issue with ICANN.
Start the transfer from Flashcloud
Once you have the unlocked domain and the transfer code in hand:
- Sign in to your account and go to Marketplace > Domains.
- Click Transfer one in (also reachable from Domains > Transfer).
- Type the full domain name and click Check eligibility.
- If it's eligible, follow the prompts; keep the authorization code handy, since every registrar transfer needs it.
The domain's remaining registration gets a free year added, and WHOIS privacy is included at no charge. See WHOIS privacy for what that does and doesn't cover, since a few TLDs don't allow it regardless of registrar.
What to expect while it's in progress
Squarespace sends a confirmation message to the domain's contact email, and depending on their process, either auto-approves after a waiting period or requires you to click through and confirm. The domain won't show up under your Flashcloud account until it finishes.
Two things worth doing before you submit the transfer, not after:
- If you're planning to point the domain at hosting with us, decide now whether you want to use our nameservers or keep DNS elsewhere. Setting this up in advance avoids a gap where the domain resolves nowhere.
- If the domain is close to its Squarespace expiration date, renew it there first, since ICANN transfer rules limit how close to expiration a transfer can complete cleanly.
When to contact support
If Squarespace stalls on the unlock, if the transfer code never arrives, or if the transfer sits in a pending state for several days with no movement, open a ticket from the portal. It goes to a real person, not a queue script, who can help you sort out next steps.
