Best DreamHost alternatives in 2026

DreamHost has its fans, but if you're reading this, something isn't working for you anymore. Maybe your renewal jumped. Maybe you needed help with something and found it sat behind a price list. Whatever brought you here, this is an honest look at the best DreamHost alternatives in 2026, based only on what each provider publishes.
The five best DreamHost alternatives are Flashcloud for the most included in one price, Namecheap for the gentlest renewal, SiteGround for datacenter choice and staging, KnownHost for a published migration cost, and AccuWeb Hosting for a flat year-two price. Each one solves a different problem, and we'll show you which is which.
Here's the hook that shapes this whole comparison. DreamHost sells a price list of professional services for work many hosts simply include. A custom website build starts at $1,499. A website transfer is from $99. Hacked-site repair is from $199. Development runs $129 an hour. DreamHost is transparent about all of it, which is to its credit. The question for you is whether that work is something a host should be charging for at all.
Every price in this guide was taken from each provider's own website in September 2026.
What are the best DreamHost alternatives?
- Flashcloud - the most included by default: free site built by our team with the copy written for you, free domain for life, free migration, staging, CDN and malware scanning on every plan.
- Namecheap - cPanel and the smallest renewal increase in this article at roughly 2.6x.
- SiteGround - eleven datacenter locations and staging from GrowBig, at a steeper renewal.
- KnownHost - a self-owned host with a published migration scope so you know the cost before you move.
- AccuWeb Hosting - an entry plan that renews at the same price you paid.

What DreamHost genuinely has
Let's be fair before we're critical. We've recommended DreamHost in six previous articles, for reasons that mostly still hold.
- It's genuinely independent. While most competitors joined large holding groups, DreamHost hasn't. That's real, and increasingly rare.
- 25 websites on the entry plan against our one. That's a lot of sites for the money.
- NVMe on every plan, and daily automated backups on every plan.
- Monthly billing available, so you're not locked into a long term for the standard rate.
- Domain privacy included free, which several hosts charge for.
- A free website built by a person, which almost nobody else offers.
- Four fixed page types stated upfront, so nobody is surprised by the scope.
- Live chat that's genuinely 24/7 in English and Spanish, confirmed in two places in their own knowledge base.
- A moderate renewal curve by category standards. $2.89 to $10.99 is 3.8x, where several hosts in this series run 5x or 6x.
- PHP 8.5 available, ahead of most shared hosts.
- They publish their Pro Services prices instead of quoting on request.
That's a strong list. Now the trade-offs, and why people still leave.
Why people are leaving DreamHost
The price list for everything else
This is the centerpiece. DreamHost sells a menu of professional services, and much of it is work other hosts fold into the plan. These are DreamHost's own published prices.
Service | DreamHost price | Flashcloud |
|---|---|---|
Custom website build | From $1,499 one-off | Included, free |
Website transfer | From $99 | Included, free |
Hacked site repair | From $199, or $299 priority | Malware scanning included |
Site optimization | From $399 | n/a |
Site update | From $299 | n/a |
Development work | $129/hr, or $99/hr on a 5-hour retainer | n/a |
SEO marketing | $399 to $1,199/mo | n/a |
DreamCare maintenance | From $24.50/mo first year, renewal not published | n/a |
The Custom Website build has three tiers. Starter is $1,499 for a homepage and 5 subpages, Plus is $1,999 for 10, and Pro is $2,799 for 15. Two rounds of design revisions and two rounds of code revisions per page are included. WooCommerce product upload, a custom logo and plugin implementation are all listed "for an additional fee" with no published price.
Again, DreamHost is upfront about these numbers, and that honesty deserves respect. The real question is whether a transfer, a malware clean-up, or a small update should cost extra at all.
What gets billed after you sign up
A few things that look included at the top of the funnel turn into line items once you're in.
- Email is a three-month trial, not an inclusion. The Launch card advertises "3 Months Free - 20 Mailboxes". In the cart, Professional Email is pre-added at "First 3 months $0.00 then $19.99/1yr". That same cart says "Up to 1 mailboxes free for 3 months" against the card's 20.
- PHP Extended Support bills automatically. If your site runs PHP 8.1 or older, the plan "will be automatically added to your account 30 days after the system first detects the outdated PHP version", at $5 to $25/mo by site count. Their terms add that "it is not possible to cancel the plan as long as your site is running an unsupported version of PHP".
- Malware scanning is an add-on, DreamShield Protect from $3/mo.
- A CDN is an add-on, BunnyCDN from $9.95/mo.
- Callbacks are an add-on, $9.95 one-off or $14.95/month, and they aren't 24/7. DreamHost has no call-in number at all.
- Staging is not on any shared plan, only DreamPress.
Credit is not the same as a refund
Read DreamHost's guarantee terms carefully. In their own words:
"A credit is available when a DreamHost hosting plan or product is cancelled, but the account remains active... A refund only occurs when the DreamHost account is closed."
So cancelling a plan gets you account credit. Getting money back means closing the account entirely. The guarantee also applies to credit card and PayPal payments only, and domain registrations are "not refundable under any circumstances", including the value of a free domain credit used at signup.
What the backups actually cover
Restores are free and self-service, which is genuinely good and worth saying. The coverage is narrower than "daily backups" suggests. DreamHost's own knowledge base states it "generally keeps about a 2-week backup (not guaranteed)" and that it "restores files only (not your database)".
For contrast, Flashcloud keeps 30 daily copies covering 30 days, database included, with one-click restore on every plan.
The free website, and who actually has to write it
This is the sharpest difference between the two offers, so we'll lead with it rather than page count.
Both hosts build a site with a real person. DreamHost's own words are "Built by a Person, Not a Bot", which is true and rare, and worth quoting. Credit where it's due.
The difference is what you have to bring. DreamHost's request form collects "Site purpose and style preferences", "Text and content", and "The ability to upload images or branding files". Their marketing page frames it the same way: "Share your content and preferences, and our team handles the setup, content placement, and template customization for a 4-page site."

The real gap: who has to produce the words and images.
Read that carefully. DreamHost's team handles setup, content placement and template customization. It does not write the words, design a logo, or source the images. Nothing on their site says it does. So the person who came to hosting because they don't have a website and don't know where to start is still staring at a blank page, just in a document rather than a page builder.
Flashcloud works the other way round. Send us your colors, logo, images and text if you have them, and we use them. Send us nothing and we create all of it: the copy, a logo if you need one, and the images. The only thing we need is a description of what you do. You can read more about the free website and how it works.
For a small business owner, that's the whole difference. Writing five pages of copy and finding usable images is the part most people cannot do, and it's the part DreamHost leaves with you.
Now the rest, on published terms only:
- Pages: DreamHost up to four, with Home, About, Services and Contact given as examples. Flashcloud up to five with a flexible mix.
- Revisions: DreamHost publishes no revision count for the free build anywhere, though its paid Custom Website plans specify two rounds of design and two of code per page. Flashcloud includes one free revision that can be a complete redesign.
- Turnaround: DreamHost "typically within 48 hours". Flashcloud one to two working days.
- Logo: not published by DreamHost for the free build, and logo design is sold as a paid Design add-on. Flashcloud includes one if you need it.
- Eligibility: DreamHost's knowledge base restricts the offer to "customers on a yearly hosting plan", while its marketing page says "Every DreamHost web hosting plan includes a Handcrafted Starter Website at no extra cost", and the plan cards still show the inclusion when the term selector is set to Monthly. We note the contradiction and leave it there.
- Not published by DreamHost: any exclusion list, what happens to the site on cancellation, or any geographic restriction.
DreamHost pricing, for reference
Plan | Intro (yearly) | Renews at | Storage | Websites | Monthly visits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Launch | $2.89/mo | $10.99/mo | 25 GB NVMe | 25 | 40k |
Growth | $3.99/mo | $12.99/mo | 50 GB NVMe | 50 | 200k |
Scale | $9.99/mo | $25.99/mo | 100 GB NVMe | 100 | 400k |
Two notes. The free domain covers year one, then a .com renews at $19.99 a year per DreamHost's own domain pricing page. And the visitor threshold is enforceable: their Resource Allocation Policy says "If your site consistently exceeds its monthly visitor threshold, you may be required to upgrade to a higher tier", while the pricing FAQ describes the numbers as traffic a tier "comfortably handles, not a hard cap". You can decide which reading you trust.
Flashcloud: the most included in one price
We built Flashcloud around a simple idea: the things you'll always need shouldn't be add-ons. Here's what comes standard on web hosting.
- A free starter website built by our team, up to five pages with a flexible mix, and we write the copy, design a logo and source the images if you don't supply them.
- A free domain for life, including registration and every renewal, with privacy.
- Free migration handled by our team on any platform, plus up to six free months matching unused time at your old host.
- NVMe and LiteSpeed on every plan.
- WordPress staging on every shared plan.
- Daily backups with 30-day history and one-click restore, database included.
- Malware scanning included. CDN included.
- Datacenter choice of New York, Seattle, Frankfurt or Singapore at signup.
- cPanel, not a proprietary panel.
- Renewal published upfront: $2.79 on a 1-year term renewing at $9.99, then fixed with no year-on-year increases.
- An anytime money-back guarantee during the initial term, refunded prorated.
- Real human support with no AI chatbot in front.
Honest limitation: one website on the entry plan against DreamHost's 25, and we're newer with less public track record. If you run several small sites, weigh that. If you want one great site with everything included, this is built for you. You can read why we started Flashcloud if you want the backstory.
Namecheap: the gentlest renewal
Namecheap keeps year two close to year one, which few hosts do. Stellar is $2.28 renewing at $5.88 with 20 GB SSD and no backups. Stellar Plus is $2.98 renewing at $7.88 with unmetered SSD and backups included. Stellar Business is $4.98 renewing at $11.88 with 50 GB SSD.
Beats DreamHost on: cPanel rather than a proprietary panel, the gentlest renewal in this article at roughly 2.6x, and free domain privacy for life on eligible extensions.
Falls short on: no backups on the entry plan, SSD rather than NVMe, and one website on Stellar against DreamHost's 25.
Best for: people who want cPanel and the smallest renewal increase.
SiteGround: datacenter choice and staging
SiteGround has a strong WordPress reputation and real infrastructure options. StartUp is $2.99 renewing at $17.99 with 10 GB and 1 site. GrowBig is $4.99 renewing at $29.99. GoGeek is $7.99 renewing at $44.99.
Beats DreamHost on: eleven datacenter locations against no location choice at DreamHost's checkout, staging on GrowBig and above where DreamHost has none on shared, and a stronger WordPress performance reputation.
Falls short on: the steepest renewal in this series at roughly six times the intro rate, and 10 GB with one website on the entry plan against DreamHost's 25 GB and 25 sites.
Best for: people who want datacenter choice and staging. We go deeper in our best SiteGround alternatives guide.
KnownHost: a published migration cost
KnownHost has been a self-owned LLC since 2006. The entry plan is $3.47 renewing at $7.16 on a 3-year term, with 10 GB NVMe, 1 site, cPanel and LiteSpeed, daily JetBackup, a 30-day guarantee, and datacenters in Atlanta, Seattle and Amsterdam.
Beats DreamHost on: cPanel, the gentlest renewal multiple of any host here at roughly 2x, and a published free-versus-paid migration scope matrix showing exactly which control panel pairs qualify, with paid work at $35 an hour against DreamHost's $129.
Falls short on: no free domain at all, 10 GB entry storage, and one website.
Best for: people moving an existing site who want to know the migration cost before they commit.
AccuWeb Hosting: a flat year-two price
AccuWeb Hosting answers the one question every renewal buyer asks. Bootstrap++ is $2.79 renewing at $2.79 on the triannual term, with 25 GB SSD, 100 websites, 750 GB bandwidth, 1 GB RAM, free daily backups and a free domain. It runs LiteSpeed with LSCache.
Beats DreamHost on: an entry plan that renews at the price you paid, 100 websites on the entry tier, and daily backups plus a free domain at entry level.
Falls short on: SSD rather than NVMe, metered bandwidth at 750 GB where DreamHost is unmetered, and 1 GB RAM with 1 CPU core, which is below the category average and half what our Start plan allocates. No staging and no CDN.
Best for: people who want to know exactly what year two costs.
How Flashcloud compares to DreamHost
DreamHost is the closest match in this whole series, because it's independent and it builds a free website too. Here's the three-year picture, side by side.
DreamHost | Flashcloud | |
|---|---|---|
Year 1 | $2.89/mo on a 1-year term | $2.79/mo on a 1-year term |
Year 2 onward | $10.99/mo | $9.99/mo, then fixed with no year-on-year increases |
Control panel | Proprietary, cPanel not available at any tier | cPanel |
Websites on entry plan | 25 | 1 |
Storage on entry plan | 25 GB NVMe | 25 GB NVMe |
3-month trial, then $19.99/yr | Included | |
Staging | DreamPress only, not on shared | WordPress staging on every shared plan |
CDN | Add-on from $9.95/mo | Included |
Backups | Daily, about 2 weeks, files only, not guaranteed | Daily, 30 days, database included, one-click restore |
Malware scanning | Add-on from $3/mo | Included |
Migration | Free WordPress plugin only; other platforms manual or paid | Free, any platform, handled by our team, plus up to 6 free months matching unused time |
Starter site pages | Up to 4, fixed types | Up to 5, flexible mix |
Who writes the content | You do. Their form collects your text and images | We write it if you do not supply it |
Logo | Sold as a paid Design add-on | Included with the free build if you need one |
Images | You upload them | We source them |
Domain | After your free first year, a .com renews at $19.99 a year. | Free for life, registration and every renewal, privacy included |
One row goes clearly to DreamHost: 25 websites against our one. That's a real advantage, and if you run several small sites you should weigh it seriously. Everywhere else, the difference is what you get without paying more, and who has to produce the work.
How to choose
Match the host to what you actually need.
- You have no site and no copy written yet: Flashcloud, because we write it. DreamHost builds too, but you supply every word and image.
- You run many small sites: DreamHost's 25 on the entry plan is hard to beat for the price.
- You want the smallest renewal jump: Namecheap or KnownHost.
- You want a flat year-two price: AccuWeb Hosting.
- You need datacenter choice and staging: SiteGround or Flashcloud.

How to switch from DreamHost without the headache
Moving hosts feels harder than it is. Done cleanly, your site stays live the whole time.
- Back up everything first. Files, databases and email. Do this before anything else, so you always have a copy that's yours.
- Use a migration service. Our team handles the move for you on any platform, so nothing gets lost or broken. Start with a free migration and we'll match up to six months of unused time at DreamHost.
- Point your domain at the right time. Time the DNS change once the new site is confirmed working, so there's no gap for visitors.

The verdict
DreamHost is a genuinely independent host with real strengths: NVMe everywhere, 25 sites on the entry plan, 24/7 live chat, and honest published prices. Give it full credit for all of that.
The catch is what sits on the price list. Transfers, malware repair, updates, and the words and images for your "free" website are yours to pay for or produce. The best DreamHost alternative is the one that gives you more speed, better support, and honest value from the start, with the work already done. If that's what you're after, Flashcloud writes your site, includes what others bill for, and shows you the renewal price before you sign.
